PFAS, PFOS, and More Importantly, Replacement Fluorinated Surfactants
There is a lot of talk these days about #pfoa or #pfas , especially with all of the movies and netfilx specials (#darkwaters, #thedevilweknow) on the subject. PFOA and PFOS are compounds used in fluorinated surfactants, which are currently being phased out of production, due to known human health risks. There is however, little to no discussion about their replacement, GenX. As such, a brief summary of the EPA’s final toxicity assessment is provided below.
The USEPA has finalized the human health toxicity assessment for Hexafluoropropylene Oxide (HFPO) Dimer Acid and its Ammonium Salt, or “GenX chemicals” at the end of 2021. These EPA health assessments determine chemical hazard levels to humans using the RFD, or reference dose. The chronic RfD is an estimate of the amount of a chemical a person can ingest daily over a lifetime that is unlikely to lead to adverse health effects in humans). The RFD for Hexafluoropropylene Oxide (HFPO) Dimer Acid (GenX) is 100 times lower than for PFBS, and six times lower than for PFOA and PFOS!
